NEWTON, NC, May 01, 2010
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Management guru Peter Drucker once said that "efficiency is
doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things"; that phrase has become something of
a mantra for Roger Wilmott. He is the network engineer for Sapulpa Public Schools, one of the
largest school districts in Oklahoma, and oversees technology at nine schools with 400 staff
members and 4,700 students.
"It's my job to ensure our 24 servers and 1,500 computers are secure, reliable and functional
around the clock," Wilmott says. "Everyone knows that one of the fundamental requirements for
a healthy network is a great anti-virus software, and a great anti-virus software should not only
be effective at keeping viruses out, but also help me to use my time efficiently."
Before adopting AVG's solution, Wilmott had been relying on Symantec's anti-virus software to
protect the district's networks. "The upkeep needed to manage it took up a good part of my
day," he recalls. "It was a chore simply to check that each workstation had received their
updates and whether there were any potential problems."
When the time came for Wilmott to renew the Symantec subscription, he decided it was time to
look for a different anti-virus solution that would be less of a drain on his productivity. So, he set
out to find a new solution that was "easier to manage."
Choosing AVG Anti-Virus was Easy
"I already had my mind made up before I even looked at other options that AVG Anti-Virus was
probably the way to go" recalls Wilmott. "While I did research into several anti-virus programs, I
had already fallen in love with AVG Anti-Virus because I used the Free Edition at home and was
impressed with its capabilities. I was sure the Network Edition would be the right solution for our
networks."
Wilmott got together with Kathy Berryhill, SPS' instructional technology director, and discussed
making the switch to AVG Anti-Virus. They agreed it would be a good replacement.
"We both liked the fact that AVG was less of a money hog than Symantec, as well as being less
of a resource hog," said Wilmott. "Plus, we had seen it in action and knew it would keep our
network healthy."
Walling Data Provides "One of a Kind" Support
Berryhill recommended Wilmott get in touch with Walling Data, a security software distributor
she had met at a recent Florida Educational Technology Conference.
Wilmott tracked down Walling Data online and called up the sales office. "Walling offered me a
great educator's discount and they even provide free and unlimited product support, so we had
no hesitation in going for a two-year contract for AVG Network Edition Anti-Virus software.
"Kathy remembered meeting folks from Walling Data at the show, and that they promoted
themselves as being the number one distributor of AVG products in the US."
Today, the majority of SPS' network has been transitioned to AVG. Both Berryhill and Wilmott
report that the process is going smoothly. When Wilmott did have questions about AVG, he
called the technical support team at Walling Data and they "were able to help us through it all,
very quickly - "that kind of support is one of a kind."
The technical team at SPS is convinced they made the right decision when they switched to
AVG Anti-Virus and Walling Data.
"With AVG and Walling Data's discount, we are saving 75 percent over our one year licensing
with Symantec," he says. "As a result of the cost savings, unlimited product support and
implementation of an anti-virus solution that is highly-automated and easy to use, our team can
use their time far more effectively."
