BRATTLEBORO, VT, November 19, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Author, cop, medical examiner, historian and New York Times Bestseller Archer Mayor is bringing his detective character, Joe Gunther—first introduced in 1988-into the 21st Century. Mayor's first three books of the now 22-volume police procedural serial are now available as e-books.

For a limited time, the first e-book of the series, Open Season is no charge on Apple, and only $0.99 from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

"I'm very grateful to my fans and supporters," says Mayor. "Distributing the e-book version of Open Season at no or low cost is both a way to say 'thank you' and I hope to introduce the series to an even wider audience."

Carefully formatted for Amazon, Nook, iPhone/iPad readers, the electronic versions of Open Season (1988), Borderlines (1990) and Scent of Evil (1991) are soon to be followed by the e-book release of up to 11 additional digital titles in the series—answering the passionate requests of his readers.

"Spurred on by suggestions from so many of my readers, I've decided to add e-books to the trade paperback, and a few audio, formats of my books already available. I have my fingers crossed that many more readers will soon be joining the growing ranks of Joe-lovers," says Mayor. "And who knows? Maybe the next installment will have Joe Gunther reading the morning paper on his iPad."

Archer Mayor has carved a niche as a New England mystery author, delving deep into research, forensic and location detail for each of his novels. It may be his tales' strong connection and description of New England details that account for his widespread appeal.

The Chicago Tribune described the Joe Gunther serial as "the best police procedurals being written in America."

Mayor is the 2004 winner of the New England Independent Booksellers Association Award for Best Fiction—the first time a writer of crime literature has been so honored.

Mayor was raised in the US, Canada and France, and since graduating from Yale ('73), has been variously employed as a scholarly editor, a researcher for TIME-LIFE Books, a political advance-man, a theater photographer, a newspaper writer/editor, a lab technician for Paris-Match Magazine in Paris, France, and a medical illustrator. He currently works as a detective for the Windham County Sheriff's Department and as a death investigator for the state's chief medical examiner. His most recent Joe Gunther story, Tag Man, is a New York Times Bestseller, now available from St. Martin's Press.

The e-books, published by Gere Donovan Press (http://press.geredonovan.com), will include updated introductions for each title by Mayor.

The release of Mayor's e-books broadens the choice now available to readers of his AMPress line of 14 trade paperbacks, available through archermayor.com and many independent bookstores.

Regarding Open Season: The New Yorker praised the debut, "It is our good fortune that Mr. Mayor's skills are equal to the vigor of his imagination."

Regarding Borderlines: The Los Angeles Times hailed book two in the series as, "First rate... Mayor has a way with white-knuckle final scenes, and he does it again in this atmospheric story."

Regarding Scent of Evil: "At ease with the history and maverick social structure of his region, the author isn't afraid to look on its dark side. As rugged as those mountains in the background, this virile series should only last as long," wrote The New York Times Book Review.
