A diplomate through the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Barker has maintained a successful private practice for more than 30 years. She began her medical career upon graduating with an MD from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1976. From there, Dr. Barker completed an internship at the Beth Israel Medical Center and a residency at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Beth Israel Medical Center. During the early years of her career, she also pursued fellowships in Glaucoma, Cornea and Refractive Surgery and did research for an additional year under a grant. In 1983, Dr. Barker entered private practice, with a specialty in ophthalmology focusing on glaucoma and cornea. She ran the VA cornea clinic for 20 years. She was also active in teaching as a Senior Clinical Instructor at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and Mount Sinai Hospital. She has given lectures in Europe as well as within the United States. In addition she has practiced medicine for The New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council since 1983.
In an effort to stay abreast of developments in the medical field, Dr. Barker is actively involved with the Women's Medical Society of New York City, the New York Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the American Medical Women's Association. She is also a fellow with the New York Academy of Medicine and the American College of Surgeons. Since 1982, she has been an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. At the present moment, Dr. Barker is a member of the staff of the New York Eye and Ear Hospital, as well as Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai-Beth Israel.
Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Barker has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World. In addition, she was included in the 3rd, 7th and 8th editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, the 5th, 7th, 11th and 12th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 1st edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, published in 1987. Dr. Barker was the recipient of the Resident Best Paper Award from Beth Israel Medical Center in 1989, as well as an Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1992 and a lifetime achievement award in 2008.
