/24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Tiffany Jessee, a bariatric surgeon in Florida, was the first bariatric surgeon in the world to perform a gastric band procedure using the SPIDER Surgical Platform, and recently demonstrated the technique on Tampa Bay's FOX-13 TV. Dr. Jessee is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. A graduate of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Jessee completed her general surgery residency training in Largo, Florida, as well as a fellowship in advanced laparoscopy and bariatric surgery.
Dr. Jessee has been performing bariatric surgery in Florida for nearly a decade. She founded Sun Coast Bariatrics in 2003 and currently devotes her practice exclusively to adjustable gastric band (Lap Band and Realize Band) surgery. Ever since Dr. Jessee performed the world's first gastric band procedure with the SPIDER surgical platform, she has continued to perform more of these weight loss surgery procedures using the single-incision instrument than any other surgeon in the United States.
Her experience also gave her an appreciation for the advantages the SPIDER platform, with its flexible laparoscopic technology, offers over traditional rigid laparoscopic surgery, which typically requires a surgeon to make five incisions. The SPIDER system enables the surgeon to perform the procedure with just one incision, often through the belly button. Beyond the improved aesthetic results, fewer incisions also means reduced post-operative pain and faster recovery for patients. For bariatric surgeons, the SPIDER system enables them to operate without having to cross their hands. Bariatric surgeons can use the operating angles of their choice and benefit from an unobstructed view of the patient's abdomen, a view aided by the cameras mounted on the SPIDER platform.
Single-incision (also known as catheter-based) technologies have been successfully developed for use in brain and heart surgery. Dr. Jessee, the only female bariatric surgeon in Florida, is helping pioneer the use of these technologies in bariatric surgery.
