PERTH, WA, October 13, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The demonstrated commitment to employee development and training of leading underground hard rock miner Barminco has been commended with recognition in two national training awards in the past month.

With a staff of close to 2000 across Australia, Barminco currently employs 101 apprentices across a range of trades. Running an innovative and flexible apprenticeship program with a focus on up-skilling participants, Barminco is unique in providing a clear career progression path for its apprentices to encourage ongoing personal and professional development.

For the first time in the company's 21 year history Barminco is proud to announce a finalist in the coveted Mining Industry Skills Centre Training Award's 'Apprentice of the Year' category, which attracts applications on behalf resource sector apprentices Australia wide.

The sole WA finalist in the award, Barminco third year auto electrical apprentice James Reid, based at Sunrise Dam in Laverton Western Australia, was a runner up at the award.

A significant, nationally recognised achievement for both Mr Reid and Barminco, the award is now in its thirteenth year and recognises company-wide commitment to excellence in employee training as well as the personal dedication of the nominee to their traineeship.

Mr Reid stood out as a candidate for the award as a self-motivated employee with a pro-active attitude towards displaying safety behaviours, an outstanding application of knowledge on the job and a commitment to self improvement and learning.

Described by his peers as a dedicated employee who works well beyond his training, Barminco Trades Training Coordinator Wayne Smillie said Mr Reid embodies the Barminco commitment to excellence in service delivery and ethos of 'Safety First - Safety Foremost'.

"At Barminco we are exceptionally proud of our apprenticeship program and the staff who gain their training with us," Mr Smillie said.

"This year we have an additional reason to celebrate our training program and in particular the achievements of James Reid for the high standard of work that has resulted in this recognition at an industry wide level."

In further recognition of the company's structured training program Barminco last month received an award from SkillsDMC, the nationally recognised industry skills council for the Resources and Infrastructure sector.

The award was received in recognition of the company's commitment to workforce planning, development and leadership in skilling new entrants and existing workers for the metalliferous mining sector in 2011.
