Nat Turner and Zach Weinberg decided to sell their original advertising tech start-up after seeing friends and family battle cancer to launch Flatiron Health. In May, Google Ventures invested $130 million in the New York-based start-up.

Glamsquad
Glamsquad was designed for busy businesspeople that want to look their best but don't have the time to visit a salon during its regular hours. The service sends a hair specialist rather than having to visit a salon. The start-up launched in January and has since raised $9million in funding.

Snapchat
The popular app for sending messages that disappear within seconds has had quite a year. After turning down a $3billion acquisition offer from Facebook the company wound up with about $163 million in funding. Snapchat has also recently announced plans for a partnership with Square which could turn the app into something larger than a fun form of entertainment.

Birchbox
2014 saw a rise in the popularity of subscription products and Birchbox was a part of the trend. The start-up delivers a package of cosmetic samples each month, letting customers try out new, recommended items. The company expanded into men's products and is also looking to expand into home decor. Birchbox raised more than $71 million in funding and has over 800,000 subscribers.
