BESI USA Recognized as Defense Industry Innovation Leader

BESI's Proprietary Waste To Energy Technology Highlighted at Defense Innovation Summit

UNIVERSITY PARK, IL, November 21, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Biomass Energy Systems, Inc. (BESI), a leading alternative engineering firm specializing in technology for renewable energy innovations, is set to showcase at the annual Defense Innovation Technology Summit in Austin, TX, December 1-3, 2015. A woman-owned company, BESI is being recognized at the Summit as a leader and top defense innovator across all branches of defense technologies. In conjunction with the Summit's Defense Innovation Technology Acceleration Challenge (DITAC), CEO Renee Comly will present the company's innovation solutions to defense challenges at the exhibit floor on the evening of December 1, 2015.

BESI's core focus is implementing innovative, yet proven technology into integrated products. As the technology provider and integrator, BESI uses their TurnW2E Gasification System to convert multiple tons of waste per day to electricity or other energy output. The technology, which teams a reliable rotary kiln reactor vessel with significant instrumentation and controls for processing efficiency and flexibility, provides high performance and efficiency of the gasification core and components. This stand-alone, integrated system can process varying amounts of mixed waste at both large and small scale, generate energy to power the system and provide net power, even at small scale. In this event, BESI will present the product developed for the USAF application, teamed with a biologic CO2 sequestration, biomass and biohydrogen production process developed with renowned algae development company from Honolulu, Hawaii, Kuehnle AgroSystems. BESI has been developing gasification systems for use by the United States military research and development community since 2007, in addition to commercial applications of their technology in use around the U.S. and the world.

DITAC is an annual event connecting cutting edge global technologies with the strategic technical needs of the Department of Defense and private companies worldwide, bringing the largest technology prospecting program in the nation together with solutions for national security concerns. From over 1000 innovations submitted to this year's innovation challenge, BESI was chosen to present their solution to leaders of government agencies, industry, and investment.

BESI is currently conducting extensive demonstrations in University Park, IL, and in Honolulu, Hawaii, both funded by the US Air Force (USAF) under its Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The goal is to validate that the technology will convert waste to energy, therefore diverting waste from landfills and preventing the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The demonstrations are being used to model the performance and practice of WTE conversion for the USAF at installations, both home and abroad.

Though the aforementioned demonstration at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam in Hawaii focuses on military bases, the impact is far reaching, as cited by U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii). Recognizing the importance of investing in alternative energy research and how that translates to saving lives, he states, "Our experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan has taught us that the military's demand for fuel in combat areas exposes servicemen and women to risk, as that fuel is transported across vulnerable territory where insurgents attack convoys and kill or injure troops protecting that fuel. The large-scale renewable energy projects that the military is investing in can reduce the demand for fuel at forward operating bases and eliminate the need to put troops at risk protecting that fuel."

"We are pleased to participate in this year's Defense Innovation Summit, and appreciate the opportunity to directly support the military's energy goals with our waste-to-energy solutions," Comly commented. "We truly appreciate the support of our technology partners and government contacts, who all work together to help waste-to-energy provide another arrow in the quiver for the USAF to meet their energy goals in an environmentally sustainable way, both at home and abroad."
