Big Five Marathon among the wildlife in South Africa
The animals of the savannahs of South Africa can be enjoyed in the classical safari way. But a better way to get close to the wildlife is to stay on the ground with them. The Red Cross Big Five Marathon gives marathon buffs the possibility to mix a challenging marathon race with an amazing safari.

/24-7PressRelease/ - COPENHAGEN, DENMARK, June 28, 2007 - The Red Cross Big Five Marathon is far from your well-known marathon experience. The runners will find themselves in the midst of giraffes and huge herds of antelopes on the savannah, and they will run closely past hippos lingering in the many rivers and lakes scattered with waterfalls. Everybody has excellent chances for close encounters with the five famous animals that gives the marathon its name: elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros, lion and leopard. And that's not all: every participant will return home having made a slight difference in the world, as the profit goes to the Red Cross.

The expression 'The Big Five' originates in the bygone big game hunting era and was used by the hunters to signify the greatest catch of them all. But the term still conjures up the romantic excitement of South Africa. Having The Big Five as an exotic background for one of the worlds most demanding marathon routes is a rare opportunity to get close to the animals and their impressive habitat.

The private Entabeni Game Reserve, in which the marathon takes place, is characterized by very varying landscapes. The course takes runners across immense, dry savannahs, past dazzling monoliths, river gorges and waterfalls and through watery mountains tangled with plants.

Marathoners and their accompanying families are not obliged to take the trip all the way to South Africa without obtaining a thorough knowledge of the South African nature and culture. The marathon tour package also includes classical game drives, which take the visitors to a larger part of the region than the marathon route can provide. In addition to this, the various tour options also include visits to Johannesburg, Pretoria and the infamous Soweto Township.

The Red Cross Big Five Marathon also offers a half marathon course. This course is equally challenging and adventurous as the 42 km marathon route - but of course only half the length.
