/24-7PressRelease/ - WHITEFISH, MT, September 14, 2008 -- Crippling arthritis made it extremely difficult for Kristine Mann to run her horse farm and hold down her job as a legal assistant. She needed both knees replaced and pins installed in her ankle to alleviate pain that had been growing for seven years. Not only was she uninsured, but she also knew that standard joint reconstruction would not work for her because she was allergic to surgical steel, chromium and cobalt. Her only hope was to have special-order titanium implants, at a U.S price well beyond her means.

"I'd been intrigued by a 60 Minutes show on medical tourism. In 2007, I started my internet research and came upon WorldMed Assist," Mann said. "But instead of going overseas for all three operations, I decided to have my ankle repaired near home to see if I could tolerate titanium pins. I decided I'd give it a year, and if I couldn't handle titanium, I'd be close to home to have the pins removed."

At the end of a year, she was satisfied that titanium was the answer for her knees, so she reconnected with Medical Tourism Company WorldMed Assist to arrange a medical journey for bilateral knee replacement in India.

"I'd been quoted $18,500 just for one titanium knee implant in the U.S.—installation and hospitalization not included! From the options WorldMed Assist gave me, I chose Wockhardt Hospital in Bangalore, India with orthopedic and knee surgeon Dr. Pai from Wockhardt Hospitals. He had a great reputation and was experienced with titanium implants. Wockhardt's price of $17,700 included surgery on both knees, AND all my hospital expenses in a deluxe private room for more than three weeks."

WorldMed Assist took the challenge in stride of working with Wockhardt Hospital and Dr. Pai to special-order two titanium implants. "With fabrication, surgeon and hospital expenses, this bilateral knee replacement would have easily cost her $90,000 in the U.S.," said WorldMed Assist CEO Wouter Hoeberechts.

When she arrived in India, Mann was immediately impressed with the extensive level of pre-surgery testing. After surgery on the first knee (they waited a week to do the other knee), she noticed another big difference compared to her hospital experience in the U.S. "I couldn't believe how much attention every patient gets. In the U.S., I'd expect to see my orthopedic surgeon regularly, but in India, doctors of all sorts checked in on me several times a day. The nursing staff was great, and very attentive. My physical therapist worked not only on my knees, but also on the pain that had developed in my back."

Mann returned home mid-July with her pain ebbing a bit more with each day, ready to resume physical therapy near home. "My life had become very limited. With my new titanium knees, I'm looking forward to living a better life and getting back to the things I enjoy doing. I never thought I'd be able to get back on a horse again, but thanks to the excellent results, I now hope to be able to do that. I'd recommend medical tourism to anyone who needs this kind of surgery and doesn't have insurance. WorldMed Assist was great to work with. They made everything easy, and stayed in close touch with me from the very beginning."
