LONDON, ENGLAND, January 21, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- One per cent of bingo fans have backed a call to ban traditional calls such as two fat ladies in an online poll.

But a massive 99% have said the calls should remain even if they are seen by some as potentially offensive.

The bingo fans were responding to a survey at www.OnlineBingoClub.co.uk which followed calls to ban the historic bingo cries.

Around 4,000 people responded to the poll with just 40 agreeing with John Sayers the former Mayor of Sudbury who won backing from many in the Suffolk town to have the calls banned.

Mr Sayers spoke out over Christmas saying terms like two fat ladies had no place in modern bingo as they could cause offence.

Mr Sayers told the BBC: "The concern was that if there might be two large ladies in the audience when I said 'two fat ladies 88' or someone might think I was looking at their legs when I said 'legs 11'. I was advised that someone might take offence and we could end up being taken to court."

But his actions were not supported by the majority in the bingo industry with many claiming the move was political correctness gone mad.

Rob Hutchison of Online Bingo Club said: We moved quickly to protect our beloved traditional cries by putting a survey up and asking our 200,000 members to vote to protect two fat ladies.

I'm delighted 4,000 have bothered to vote but if I'm honest I'm a little surprised that as many as 40 voted in support of the ban.

I find it hard to believe that even one per cent of bingo fans would support such a barmy idea.
