As a research fellow for the Hyundai Motor Company's Fuel Cell Research Laboratory, Dr. Hong is an integral member of the team responsible for ensuring that fuel cell electric vehicles manufactured and distributed by Hyundai adhere to the highest standards of quality and safety. Prior to working in the research and development division of one of the world's leading automotive manufacturers, he worked for the Samsung General Chemicals Company from 1999 to 2003, and for the Samsung-Total Petrochemicals Company from 2003 to 2006.
Dr. Hong earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from the department of fiber and polymer science at Seoul National University in 1993 and 1995, respectively, followed by a Ph.D. in 1999. Shortly after completing his doctorate, he was a visiting research scholar in the department of materials science and engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, then served in a similar role in the department of mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.
Having become involved in his profession in order to make society more eco-friendly through hydrogen fuel cell technology, he has conducted significant research into increasing the general public's awareness of the benefits of driving electric vehicles. In fact, a career highlight for Dr. Hong was contributing to the research and development for manufacturing Hyundai's Tucson ix35, the world's first mass-produced fuel cell electric vehicle, in February 2013.
