Bond & Taylor Warns Consumers that Study Links Actos to Bladder Cancer

The law firm Bond & Taylor is warning consumers that a recent study links Actos to bladder cancer. Consumers who have developed bladder cancer after taking Actos are encouraged to call the law firm of Bond & Taylor today.

IRVINE, CA, November 02, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The law firm of Bond & Taylor is warning consumers of a study linking popular type 2 diabetes medication, Actos , to bladder cancer. This newest study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute was contributed by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Researchers found that patients taking thiazolidinedione (TZD) drugs such as Actos (Pioglitazone) were two to three times more likely to develop bladder cancer than patients who took sulfonylurea drugs. This is especially disturbing news because TZDs are prescribed to an estimated 20% of diabetes patients today.

This study reinforces government regulators' opinions. In June 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a warning to consumers that Actos was under review for safety concerns. The FDA stated that based on a ten year meta study of Actos patients, consumers who took Actos for a year or longer were as much as 40% more likely to suffer from bladder cancer. According to the FDA, an estimated 2.35 million Americans filled a prescription for Actos last year alone, and over 15 million prescriptions are written for this type 2 diabetes drug worldwide.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there are an estimated 70,530 cases of bladder cancer in the U.S. each year and 14,680 deaths. These numbers could rise significantly based upon Actos performance in recent studies. Bond & Taylor is encouraging patients taking Actos to review potential side effects with their doctor. Should a patient develop bladder cancer, the law firm of Bond & Taylor would like to offer a free consultation to discuss eligibility for compensation.
