LAWRENCEVILLE, GA, January 23, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In the U.S., the beauty standard has always been to have sun-kissed skin. From the poolside to the tanning bed, excessively baking under UV rays can damage the skin, increasing your risk of skin cancer. That is why dermatologists stress the importance of sunscreen. You need to protect your skin because too much sun isn't good. It can cause premature aging, dark spots and cancerous skin lesions, such as Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC).

BCC and SCC are abnormal growths or lesions that arise in the skin's epidermal layer. These are the two most common forms of skin cancer. To treat BCC and SCC, you need professional care. At North Georgia Dermatology, Dr. Gill, dermatologist in Braselton, GA and the surrounding areas, performs Mohs surgery, a highly specialized treatment for removal of skin cancer. Dr. Frederic Mohs developed this procedure in hopes of completely removing cancerous cells and affected tissue with minimal loss of normal surrounding skin.

Mohs surgery's efficacy is due to the precise method of removal and immediate microscopic examination of only the affected cancerous tissue. Surgical repair of the remaining wound is then performed, usually all in one day.

It's important to treat skin cancer lesions early. While it is necessary to treat every BCC and SCC, not every BCC or SCC is neccessarily a candidate for Mohs surgery. Most on the body can be treated with traditional surgical excision or destructive techniques. For cosmetically sensitive regions of the head and neck, areas where the skin cancers have a higher risk of recurrence, Mohs surgery is usually employed. With Mohs surgery, we have the best chance of removing every cancer cell. It is the single most accepted technique to properly remove BCC and SCC, especially of the head and neck area," says Dr. Gill, Braselton, GA dermatologist.

Mohs surgery boasts a 99 percent cure rate. During the day of surgery, the affected area is numbed, and the visible cancer and a layer of the surrounding tissue are removed, preparing them for microscopic examination. Dr. Gill will only remove one layer of skin at a time to study the margins. Once the margins are cancer-free, the surgery is successfully completed.

When it comes to your skin health, be cautious and careful. If you notice anything unusual in regards to your skin, please contact your Braselton, GA dermatologists at North Georgia Dermatology.
