How come no matter how much you seem to work out, you just can't seem to put on any real muscle?

I was a little weary of the story, like always since I've heard the same spiel many times before, but it still captured my attention to give the program a try. The start-up price was a bit high ($77 for a complete six month package) for an investment but, again mostly due to my friend mentioning the site, I purchased the product and gave it a shot. It wasn't but a week into the plan when I injured my back during a basketball game and had to take it easy for over a month. I actually completely forgot about the plan until almost another month later when I spoke to the same friend at a party. He asked me how the workout was going and I didn't want to say I quit so I told him I was going on strong.
