TAMPA, FL, December 29, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Breast implants should, ideally, be a lifelong solution. In some instances they are. In others, implants may rupture or be impacted by other defects over time, requiring their replacement.

Breast implants, like all medical devices, are not intended by their manufacturers to last forever. New breast implants have the potential of lasting for ten or more years, but replacing breast implants may eventually become a necessity for all women who have had breast augmentation.

Implant Rupture

Breast implant rupture is exactly what it sounds like. One of both of your breast implants may rupture or deflate due to various factors including trauma, capsular contracture, or simple wear and tear. Ruptures in saline implants are easier to detect as they tend to deflate at a much faster rate. If you have silicone implants, ruptures may not be detected until you have an MRI. Often, silicone ruptures are detected during breast cancer screening.

If your implant ruptures, there is no reason to despair. Your plastic surgeon can simply remove the ruptured implant and replace it with a new one. Neither saline nor silicone have been proven to have adverse health effects when implants rupture, but swift replacement can help ensure a continuation of your aesthetic results.

Implant Longevity

There is no set amount of time an implant will last. Some implants last for twenty years, others for three. How long your breast implants last will be unique to your situation. Some plastic surgeons recommend replacing implants every ten years. Others, however, advise their patients to wait until when, or if, there is a problem. Your plastic surgeon will make this recommendation based on the particular needs of your body.
