BREVARD COUNTY, FL, November 14, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Reality Check DVD will be used by the Brevard Sheriff Department as a tool for positive community policing. The DVD will be distributed by the Sheriff's Department to families with teenage kids. A launch event will be held at 10am on Thursday, November 19 at the Sheriff's Headquarters in Titusville with Sheriff Jack Parker and Lawrence Lawton of the Reality Check Program (reporters and photographers are invited). Sheriff Parker along with Lawrence Lawton will meet with Chief Deputies, Watch Commanders and Jail Commander Susan Jeter on Thursday to discuss the new programs implementation.
Community Oriented policing is a philosophy adopted by the Brevard Sheirff Departments that stresses establishing partnerships with citizens and business. Over 1200 brave and dedicated men and women serve the Sheriff's Office. The Departments Crime Prevention Unit is committed to providing innovative community relations, crime prevention and youth programs focused at reducing crime and improving the quality of life in Brevard County.
The Reality Check DVD is a one of a kind product that shows teens and young adults the consequences of making bad choices. Topics include decision making, what prison is REALLY like, what you will lose, and avoiding and dissolving bad associations. The DVD is a 67 minutes in length and appropriate for ages 11 and up.
The Reality Check DVD is a great tool for positive community policing and helps in three ways:
1. It stops senseless arrests on minor issues. The Sheriff's Deputy who catches a kid say breaking an abandon house window will take the kid home and give the kids parents the DVD and tell them this is compliments of the Sheriff's Department, your kid needs to watch it, we caught him in a minor infraction which could lead to more serious trouble. After watching the DVD the kid might "get it" and realize that that the choices they make today can affect the rest of their life.
2. By possibly changing the way the kid thinks we save possible future victims of that kid, especially if the kid does some serious crime.
3. The program fosters great community relations between the police and the citizens. Right now most communities have an "us against them" mentality. By helping citizens (i.e. parent with a wayward kid) the citizens will then be more positive to helping the Sheriff's Department solve crime in their areas. They'll have this kind of mentality, "hey, the Sheriff helped my kid, they didn't just arrest him" The next time a major crime happens the citizens are more inclined to get involved.
Lawrence Lawton, Reality Check Founder stated, "The savings and "good will" generated by distributing the Reality Check DVD are priceless to a community. When the Sheriff's Department, city or any organization for that matter buys bulk DVD's they can get them printed with their logo saying "compliments of" - what a powerful tool. A small investment by a Sheriff, police department, city, etc. will return an untold amount on fewer arrests; cops can be out patrolling the streets for serious stuff, preventing REAL crimes and having a positive presence. What about now solving a serious crime like a murder or rape when you have the community willing to help instead of hinder. The cops will not be looked at as an enemy, but as a helper". Lawton is extremely excited about the program and the innovation shown by Sheriff Jack Parker in adopting this program.
