GARDEN CITY, GA, May 01, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- This three-week summer program at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government is designed to help public officials from across the country refine leadership skills, develop management techniques and create strategic solutions for their municipalities. The curriculum emphasizes analysis of real-life case studies, encouraging collaboration between faculty members and participants. Admission to the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program is competitive and based on professional achievement and organizational responsibility.
"This is the first time a public official from Garden City has been selected for this top educational program at Harvard University," said Garden City Mayor Andy Quinney. "I'm confident that Brian Johnson will bring back exciting ideas that can help Garden City reach even higher levels of success in the future."
Under Johnson's direction, Garden City is relocating its city center to a mixed-use Town Center that will feature a new City Hall, visitors center, regional police academy, five-acre town green and more than 800,000 square feet of commercial, retail and residential development. The Town Center, which has earned praise from Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue as well as a Georgia Planning Association Award, promises to breathe new life into a previously undeveloped area of Garden City.
Johnson is also spearheading the comprehensive re-branding of Garden City, which includes a number of projects like the development of a new city seal and new logos for the fast-growing Chatham Country municipality. This ambitious City Manager was recently featured in the April 2009 issue of Georgia Trend for his visionary leadership and impact on Chatham County.
Prior to joining Garden City as the City Administrator in 2007, Johnson served nine years in the military as both an Intelligence Analyst in the U.S. Navy and as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army. His city management experience began in Iraq where, as the Officer-in-Charge of a civil-military operation in the Baghdad suburb of Sadr City, he successfully planned and organized
the formation of a municipal government, supervised the rebuilding of its supporting civil infrastructure and assisted in its economic development. During his tenure in the military, he earned two Bronze Star Medals for Valor.
Johnson has a B.A. in Political Science and a master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Georgia.
