Buick is Joining the Race to Make Backup Cameras Standard, Notes Buick Dealership Ferman Buick GMC
GMC Buick will include backup cameras as standard equipment in 2015 vehicles.
TAMPA, FL, July 29, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As of May 2018, new vehicles (under 10,000 pounds) will be required to have rear view cameras. Buick, along with several other manufacturers, has decided to get ahead of the curve and include backup cameras on all of its vehicles for the 2015 model year, says Ferman Buick of Tampa. [1]
The federal government authorized this change due to the high number of injuries and fatalities caused by vehicles backing up. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 200 people die each year while an additional 15,000 are injured by a vehicle in reverse. [1] Buick resourced a study from the University of Michigan that found an even greater risk: nearly 300 people are killed and 18,000 are injured annually according to their research. UM's Transportation Research institute also found that backup cameras reduce blind spots by 90 percent. [2]
The standard backup camera will be in addition to a full complement of Buick's available safety technologies. The 2015 lineup at Ferman's Buick dealer in Tampa will offer Forward Collision Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. [1]
Backup cameras are currently prevalent in the United States with two-thirds of the top 50 best-selling vehicles in the country having the technology as standard or as an optional equipment enhancement. [2]
