C. Thomas Gooding Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

After dedicating 42 years of his professional life to psychology, education, and academic administration, Mr. Gooding currently embraces the venerable title of emeritus at the State University of New York (SUNY) Oswego. He served for 16 years as dean and then provost for SUNY Oswego, and has taught for the university since 1964 while conducting educational research funded by numerous state and federal grants. Mr. Gooding is also a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve, serving to the rank of first lieutenant from 1954 to 1956.

Mr. Gooding was born to Charles T. and Gladys Gooding in Tampa, Florida in 1931. He matriculated at the University of Florida, earning a BA in 1954 and teaching for two years at the Memorial School at Tampa. While earning a MEd in 1962 from the University of Florida, he served as an assistant principal, then principal, at St. Mary's School in Tampa. He went on as a graduate fellow and instructor with the University of Florida for one year before earning an EdD there, only later to move onwards to SUNY Oswego as an associate professor.

Mr. Gooding taught until 1982, when he concurrently accepted the position of associate dean of graduate studies. He became dean of graduate studies and research in 1989 and transitioned to provost and vice president for academy affairs in 1995. Three years later, he accepted the title of emeritus from SUNY Oswego. Mr. Gooding has been asked to travel as a visiting professor to the University of Liverpool in England, and served as a member of the SUNY Chancellor's Task Force on Teacher Education in 1984.

While teaching and administrating, Mr. Gooding also conducted independent research on numerous grants from the SUNY Research Foundation, the New York State Department of Education, and the National Science Foundation. Some of his findings are documents in his book, "Learning Theories in Educational Practice," published in 1971. He is also a contributing author to "Florida Studies in the Helping Professions," "Questioning and Discussion: A Multidisciplinary Study," and "Research Matters to the Science Teacher," as well as numerous professional journals.

Mr. Gooding is a leading member of the American Psychological Association, the Eastern Educational Research Association, and the American Educational Research Association. From 2002 to 2005, he was named trustee of the University of the South, and from 1996 to 2011, he served the board of the Oswego College Foundation. He has been a director of the board of the Bishop Gray Inns Foundation since 2008.

For decades of service to teaching psychology and academia, Mr. Gooding was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, two volumes of Who's Who in American Education, and the 1992 to 1993 volume of Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals. Mr. Gooding married Shirley Ann Puckett in 1953, and they had four children together: Steven Thomas, Carol Ann, David Lee, and Mark Charles.
