LENIOR, NC, November 26, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Caldwell County Economic Development Commission's new initiative to promote retail and commercial development in North Carolina has resulted in Wal-Mart, and FATZ Restaurant opening new locations in Caldwell County, with Carolina Pottery opening in early 2009.

A regional chain with over 40 stores, FATZ opened a new restaurant in Lenoir, North Carolina last October. Two Wal-Mart Super-Centers now anchor the northern and southern ends of the county in Lenoir and Granite Falls.

"Carolina Pottery will be located in the old Wal-Mart building in Lenoir right next to the new Wal-Mart Super Center," explains Alan Wood, senior project manager of Caldwell County Economic Development Commission, "which is a very good example of the effective re-use of commercial space,"

Eighteen months ago, the commission assigned a task force headed by Lisa Sims, CCEDC's Marketing and Business Development Coordinator, to assess the retail situation. The task force looked at commercial and retail properties for sale in Caldwell County, explains Sims. "We realized that a large portion of our tax dollars were flowing out of our county to retailers in adjacent counties, that were better addressing consumers' needs," Sims remarked.
"We have determined that retail and commercial development in North Carolina and, specifically, Caldwell County, is synonymous with economic development and no less important than industrial development" emphasizes Wood. "The impact it can have on sales tax revenues and the improvement in lifestyles that comes from quality retailers in our county can add to the economic well-being of the citizens of Caldwell County."
