/Cambridge Who's Who/ - NEW YORK, NY, September 24, 2007 -
Mercedes Ellington, president and founder of The Duke Ellington Center, has been named
Cambridge Who's Who Executive of the Year for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of entertainment.
Ellington has an impressive background with 30 years of experience in
entertainment. "I am separated from others by my survival in the industry," she says, about staying relevant in the field. She was the first and only
woman of color on the
Jackie Gleason show for seven seasons, an experience that brought the ugly side out of people. "I was protected by Jackie Gleason while being criticized for my appearance as the only black woman on his show," she recalls. Strength, resilience and success followed. As the president and founder of
The Duke Ellington Center, Ellington is responsible for instructing
dance and
theater classes,
choreographing and
directing as well as producing performances. The Duke Ellington Center is a production venue for education that provides choreography, production, dance performances and guest appearances. To sum it up, Ellington's career is an illustrious and eventful one. For more information on her, or The Duke Ellington Center, visit
