/24-7PressRelease/ - SAINT LOUIS, MO, October 01, 2007 - Teresa J. Vietti, professor emeritus of pediatrics for Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year
for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of pediatric oncology research into the cure of children with cancer.
Vietti has an impressive background with more than 50 years of professional experience. She started her research career in the treatment of children with cancer at the University of Texas Medical School in Dallas in 1958. In 1961, she returned to St. Louis Children's Hospital and, with her colleagues, joined the Southwest Oncology Group to continue her career in childhood cancer research. She became the Chair of the Acute Leukemia Committee, and then Vice Chair of the Pediatric Division. When the pediatricians decided to separate from the Adult Division and form their own assemblage, the Pediatric Oncology Group, she was elected group Chair. This consisted of 90 childhood cancer centers in hospitals across the United States and Canada with over 1,000 investigators plus their nurses, data managers, a statistical office and 12 supportive research laboratories - all supported by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Since she was most interested in finding new, more effective agents, she also obtained a research grant to support her work in this area from the National Cancer Institute.
Vietti has published more than 200 articles in medical journals. She received her MD from Baylor University in 1953 and her bachelor of arts from Rice University in 1949. She is a member of the International Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Pediatric Society, the American Society for Cancer Education and the American Association for Cancer Research. She is the recipient of the UNICO Award and the Aphrodite Jannopoulo Hofsommer Award from Washington University School of Medicine, as well as the 2nd Century Award. She has also been recognized as a distinguished alumnus of Rice University.
