CHICAGO, IL, January 31, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Your cornea is the dome-shaped outermost layer of your eye. Disease, trauma, and infection can all have a dramatic impact on this area of your eye because it is exposed any time your eyelids are open. A corneal tear is often the result of these damages and can serve to impact vision by creating opaque or cloudy areas. As a consequence, you may suffer from vision problems that are severe enough to require a corneal transplant.

When your cornea is impacted by disease, infection, or injury, healthy cells begin working immediately to correct the problem. In many instances, your body is able to heal the tear without producing a vision-disrupting scar. Cases such as these may still allow you to have LASIK surgery because your scar will not interfere with a successful outcome.

LASIK on a Scarred Eye
To determine if you are a candidate for LASIK surgery, your eye doctor will need to make a careful evaluation of your eyes. In addition, he will need to know your complete medical and vision history. If you have a scarred cornea, he will need to know the cause, and the consequences of the initial tear.

Having a scarred cornea does not disqualify you from LASIK surgery, but the location and depth of the scar may. If the scar is not in the center of your cornea, you may still be a good candidate for LASIK surgery. In fact, some scars can be eliminated during your LASIK procedure, meaning your vision can be corrected, and any potential future complications from your scar can be reduced.

However, if a scar is located closer to the center of your eye, you may need to seek out an alternative method of Laser Vision Correction, such as Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK).

Determining Candidacy for LASIK
The best way to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK surgery is through a one on one consultation with an experienced LASIK surgeon.During this consultation, your potential eye doctor will be able to evaluate the health and condition of your eyes, and better be able to gauge the outcome of your surgery. Thanks to recent advancements in LASIK technology, many people who were once ineligible for LASIK can now enjoy its many benefits. By working closely with a dedicated LASIK surgeon, even people with scarred corneas can enjoy a life free of cumbersome prescription eyewear.

If you live in the areas of Chicago or Arlington Heights, Illinois and would like to learn more about candidacy for LASIK surgery, please visit the website of Doctors for Visual Freedom for additional information at www.doctorsforvisualfreedom.com.
