Can Jimmy Garoppolo's Dethrone Tom Brady During Deflategate's Suspension?

With Tom Brady officially getting a four game suspension for his involvement in Deflategate, the Pats will finally see what they have in Jimmy Garoppolo.

This is the first time the Pats will start a QB other than Tom Brady in the regular season since 2008 when Matt Cassel took over.

SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA, July 16, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When the news broke that Tom Brady finally desisted from appealing his 'Deflategate' suspension, we couldn't help but think of second string QB Jimmy Garoppolo.

"I have made the difficult decision to no longer proceed with the legal process. I'm going to work hard to be the best player I can be for the New England Patriots and I look forward to having the opportunity to return to the field this fall," said Brady in his statement.

Brady's suspension will keep him out against the Cardinals, Dolphins, Texans and Bills, with the last three all taking place at home. The season is just weeks away, and Garoppolo is expected to start the first four games. The odds for Garoppolo to become the next Brady are against him, but he will certainly try his best to replace the three-time Super Bowl MVP.

Does Garoppolo have what it takes to carry the Pats in Tom Brady's Absence?

In Brady's first full season, the Pats went 11-5 and won the Super Bowl. While it's unfair to hold Garoppolo to those very high standards, the second-round pick from Eastern Illinois has a solid chance to top Brady's numbers from the first four starts of his career. Garoppolo is favored to throw for six touchdowns (+200) and between 751 and 950 passing yards in his first four starts.

New England needs a good start to make the postseason. Since 1990, teams that started the season 3-1 went to the playoffs 64% of the time, so that's definitely the goal if not 4-0. According to MyBookie.ag, the odds for a 4-0 start are listed at +165 (bet $100 to win $165). The most likely scenario is 3-1 record followed by 2-2 start. A 0-4 start is the least likely scenario. In the previous six seasons, New England hasn't lost more than four games, finishing 12-4 in each of the past four and qualifying for the postseason every time.

GAROPPOLO'S RECORD - 1ST 4 GAMES
ZERO GAMES WON: 9 to 1
1 GAME WON: 5 to 1
2 GAMES WON: 1.5 to 1
3 GAMES WON: 1.25 to 1
4 GAMES WON: 1.65 to 1

Brady had 820 passing yards and five TD's combined over his first four starts, but things got off slowly for him. New England went 1-1 in his first two, as he threw for 254 yards with no TD. But he really stepped up in the next two with 566 yards and five touchdowns. A similar situation could happen for Garoppolo because his two most difficult opponents will face him first.
