Captain George Sakakini, MD Honored as a VIP Member by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Military Healthcare

While stationed in Germany, Capt. Sakakini served as Medical Director and Officer in Charge of the Deployed Warrior Medical Management Center.

PEARL HARBOR, HI, April 18, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Captain George Sakakini, MD, Staff Family Physician for the United States Navy's Naval Health Clinic Hawaii, has been recognized as a VIP member by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in military healthcare.

Navy CAPT George Sakakini has enjoyed a memorable career. Inspired by a cousin who became a doctor in the Army, Sakakini pursued a medical career in the Navy and attended West Point. However, after completing his second year, he decided to instead complete his pre-medical education at Hampden-Sydney College, graduating magna cum laude in 1973. Then, while applying for medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School, he accepted a Navy Scholarship. Thus, his future was mapped out. For the next two decades, he spent time on active duty, in the naval reserves, and as a civilian in a wide variety of practices that ranged from teaching Family Medicine in a rural setting to serving as an executive medical director for a large regional military contract. In 1998, he went back on full-time active duty. In 2004, when the Navy began helping support the casualties coming into Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany from Iraq, Sakakini was the team leader of the first small group deployed. Upon his arrival, the then-doctor in charge of the Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom mission was needed elsewhere and Sakakini was given the position of Medical Director and Officer In Charge of the Deployed Warrior Medical Management Center. For nine months, he ensured proper care for every wounded service member and worked on a data base that helped track the approximate 10,000 patients treated at Landstuhl during that period. He later returned to Parris Island to treat Marine Corps recruits and Navy families. In 2006, he was transferred to Hawaii where he cared for Navy and Marine Corps families. In August 2008, he deployed to Iraq for six months where he treated trauma casualties on the front lines. Currently, he is back in Hawaii providing care to Navy active duty personnel and their families.
