/24-7PressRelease/ - LONDON, UK, June 04, 2006 - Car insurance frauds are making honest drivers pay more for their insurance covers. A new insurance fraud alluring the following drivers to crash into the cars ahead is not only responsible for adding up to the insurance costs but also dangerous for road safety. Drivers can defeat the objectives of criminal gangs by simply maintaining a safe distance from the car ahead.

A new form of car insurance fraud has been detected making it imperative for the drivers to remain careful against organised criminals who deliberately cause collisions.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said that it has become aware of increasing number of accidents in Yorkshire where organised criminals disconnect brake lights on their cars and 'slam on the brakes at roundabouts'. When an innocent driver rams into the back of the car, such driver is more often than not assumed to be the faulty person. The criminals then attempt to claim from the victim's insurer.
According to ABI, all types of insurance frauds add about five per cent to the cost of insurance resulting in a total of 1.5 billion a year extra burden on the policyholders.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance at the ABI said that the extent of fraud was underestimated and yet its impact was very real and serious as it has become as big an earner for criminal gangs as drugs. Starling added that the initial impact of these acts was in the cost to the insurer and to the customer but the second, and more important, impact was on personal safety.
