SAN RAFAEL, CA, June 20, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The experts at Caring Dentistry of San Rafael have answered the five most common questions about dental implants.

"Dental implants are surgically placed in your gums to look, act and feel just like real teeth would," notes Dr. Tim Miller, DDS. "Benefits include improved comfort in eating, talking, and even smiling, but unfortunately many dentists are not familiar with surgical implans."

1. What is the placement process for dental implants?
Before placing the actual implants in, an anchor is placed in the gums to hold the new artificial teeth. This is a surgical operation that will take several hours, but it will ensure that your implants will stay in place. You must allow several weeks for the bone to grow around the anchor and hold it in place. Once the gums have healed, the artificial teeth are made and placed in to the anchors. Several fittings may be required to get the perfect fit, but the end result will be well worth it!

2. Is dental implant surgery painful?
No. Dental implant surgery does take a few hours, but a local anesthetic will be used so you do not feel any discomfort. After the surgery, you will be given medication to prevent any post-surgery discomfort. Most dental professionals will even say that you could go back to work within a few days of the surgery.

3. Should I have a special dentist place my implants?
You will want to have an oral surgeon (known as an implantologist) with specialization in dental implants or periodontist place your implants. Do not be too shy to ask the health professional you are considering if they have the proper qualifications for dental implant surgery.

4. How are dental implants cared for?
Unlike dentures, no additional cleaners, tools or dental devices are needed to care for your dental implants. You care for your dental implants just as you would for your normal teeth. This of course means brushing and flossing multiple times a day. You will also need to see a dentist regularly to have your implants progress monitored and your dental health checked.

5. How long will my dental implants last?
If monitored and maintained correctly your implants will last a lifetime. Dental implants are amongst the most successful procedures in the dentistry industry, with a success rate of over 95% for the lower jaw and 90% for the upper jaw.
