Dr. Petiet is a practicing clinical psychologist, experienced mountaineer as well as expert skier, a registered nurse, and a leader in the field of somatic integrative therapy with over 42 years as a healthcare professional. She currently runs her own private practice in psychotherapy, consulting, and sports psychology in Berkeley. She has researched and written about grief in divorcees and widows, the neuropsychological effects of high altitude mountaineering on women, and in 2016, Dr. Petiet documented her own recovery from a ski racing accident in the book, "The Day I Died: Brain Trauma and the Journey Back." In 1952, Dr. Petiet was born in Newport News, Virginia, to Gaston Kaleski and Ann Pettit Johnson. Her initial professional intent was to study nursing, and she earned a BS in Nursing from Baylor University in Texas and received her RN in Colorado. She served as a charge nurse at Elizabeth Knutsson Hospital, in Estes Park, Colorado, and later became a nurse coordinator for an inpatient alcohol and drug abuse treatment program at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, California. Dr. Petiet was encouraged by her nursing mentor to further her studies and chose psychology because it was the discipline she enjoyed the most.
Dr. Petiet received an American College Scholarship to help earn her MA from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) - Berkeley, in 1980. While in graduate school, she worked as a research and training consultant for Phoenix Recovery Centers in Alameda, California, and she spent weekends working as a nurse in acute care hospital units. She received a Soroptomist Fellowship to help fund and complete her PhD degree in 1982 and accepted a post in the Department of Psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo, California. Dr. Petiet also launched her own private practice.
Dr. Petiet is passionate about women's sports, and served as a psychology consultant with Women's Ski Programs in Aspen, Colorado, and British Columbia from 1986 to 1994. In 1986, Dr. Petiet was part of the American Women's Expedition to Mount Kongur, China. She developed and co-directed a Women's Specialty Program as a faculty member of the Rosebridge Graduate School in California, and she served as adjunct faculty for CSPP Berkeley and Alameda. From 1978 to 1979 she interned with Eden Youth and Family Services, Hayward, California, and from 1979 to 1980 she interned at the Vacaville Correctional Medical Facility where she worked with male felons. From 1980 to 1981 she was a Psychology Trainee at Kaiser in Vallejo, California; and from 1981 to 1982 she was a Psychology Resident at Kaiser in San Francisco, California.
Dr. Petiet has been a longtime member of the American Psychological Association, the Association of Women in Psychology, the World Federation for Mental Health, the National Organization of Women, and Amnesty International. She was named 1974 Baylor Hospital Women's Auxiliary Scholar, and 2015 Berkeley Winner of the Patients Choice Awards in Psychology. Dr. Petiet was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women, two volumes of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, two volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, two volumes of Who's Who in the World, the 1993 to 1994 volume of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, and the 1993 to 1994 volume of Who's Who in American Nursing.
