As a senior official at USAID, Dr. Coleman has been inspired by her parents who also had careers in public service, and instilled a religious faith and background in her that persists. To prepare for her career, Dr. Coleman earned her Ed.D. at Nova Southeastern University in child development with a concentration in management. She has also earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science/international relations at Morgan State and Atlanta Universities, respectively. Dr. Coleman is among the elite few civilians who earned a graduate degree in strategic studies at U. S. Army War College.

She would like to be remembered as a woman who cared about humanity. She feels that no matter what a person does with his or her life, they should have a positive impact on others. She has served as a leader and role model for many development professionals who have worked with her over the years. She is compassionate, empathetic and has left a mark on improving conditions in other countries, as well as her own. Dr. Coleman has specialized in failing and failed states, emphasizing ways in which to help prevent radicalization.

Dr. Coleman is an elder at Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church, a life member of NAACP and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and serves on the Board of Directors at The Dwelling Place, Inc. A graduate of Leadership Montgomery and Leadership America, Dr. Coleman is an outstanding motivational speaker. She is active in her community and offers ongoing support to breast cancer survivors as her way of honoring and remembering her sister.
