/Worldwide Who's Who/ -- Carolyn J. Edwards, RHIA, Director of Health Information for fifteen plus years in various hospital systems, including the Veteran's Administration, County and District facilities and also Corporate owned facilities, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for dedication, leadership and excellence in providing overall direction to health care activities across the localized health system and the collection and maintenance of clinical documentation.
As a Director of Health Information Management, Ms. Edwards is responsible for leadership accountability and oversight for planning, organization, supervision, coordination of operational and budgetary activities for Health Information Management, coding, documentation, abstraction and transcription. Ms. Edwards developed, recommended, implemented and evaluated goals, objectives, policies and procedures related to Health Information. Ms. Edwards selected, trained and supervised related professional and clerical staff.
She gained experience as amulti-facility Director of Health Information Management while working at the Veterans' Administration during the period when the Seattle VA Medical Center and the American Lake VA Medical Center merged to become Puget Sound Health Care System. She was successful in building a cohesive team of workers in each department while eliminating duplicity. Ms. Edwards also provided leadership for a project to turn a cold storage facility into a warehouse to store medical records at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital. During her stay at Hazel Hawkins she also assisted in the hospital's initial transition to an electronic record.
Ms. Edwards has several years of experience as Privacy Officer/Assistant Privacy Officer with responsibility for initial roll out, training, daily oversight and reporting under guidelines established by the Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
She attributes the success of her career to paying close attention to details, a desire to remain abreast of changes as well as the daily challenges of her chosen profession.
She became interested in her profession while working as Medical Record Analyst.
Ms. Edwards received her Bachelor's Degree in Medical Record Administration from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina in 1991. She studied Risk Management at Pepperdine University in Carson, California. She is an active member of AHIMA, CHIA and NAPW.
In the future Ms. Edwards will continue to pursue her interest in Privacy, Security and HIPAA Compliance.
