Celebrating Women's Equality Day, 92 Years of the Power of the Vote. League of Women Voters of Northern Valley Recognizes Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

The League of Women Voters of Northern Valley plans to celebrate Women' s Equality Day on August 26th and prepare voters to participate in the fall elections.
    LEONIA, NJ, August 26, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- August 26th marks the 92nd anniversary of the 19th constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote. The League of Women Voters of Northern Valley (LWVNV) will celebrate this milestone on Women's Equality Day by preparing voters for this fall's big election.

"This year on Women's Equality Day, our focus it to protect voting rights for all and ensure that everyone who is eligible to vote can," said Joyce Luhrs, member of the LWVNV board of directors and public relations chair. Founded in 1920, the League does not support or oppose candidates and is not affiliated with any political party. We want everyone to exercise the right to vote."

This fall, LWVNV members from over 20 towns will work to make democracy strong through voter registration drives, educational forums, and local advocacy."

The League was an outgrowth of the 19th amendment passed in 1920 giving women the right to vote. With 800 local Leagues throughout the country, the organization gained prestige by maintaining its non-partisanship; sponsoring candidate forums for local, state and national elections; holding registration drives; disseminating nonpartisan information on candidates; and holding public meetings to discuss current issues. League membership is open to both men and women of voting age who support its mission.
