(CARD), the world's largest autism organization providing state of the art therapy will host an Autism Treatment Insurance workshop for parents of children with autism. The free workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Best Western Hotel, located at 6721 Commerce Street in Springfield, Virginia. The workshop will provide information about the new Virginia mandate, what insurance companies will be required to cover as well as information on provider networks, preauthorizations and claim filing.
"26 states now mandate and cover for behavioral therapies for the treatment of autism, says CARD Managing Supervisor Mary Ann Cassell, MA, BCBA. "Virginia recently became state number 26," says Cassell. "The Virginia mandate will take effect on January 1, 2012. We want to ensure families are prepared to understand their rights before then."
Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder that is marked by the presence of impaired social interaction and communication in addition to a restricted repertoire of activities and interests. According to the Centers for Disease Control Prevention, one in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism in America, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. An estimated 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide are affected by autism.
