Dr. Lee is a South Korean professor of materials science and engineering at his alma mater, Hanyang University, with a particular expertise in phase transformations in metals and alloys, the structure and properties of engineering alloys, the mechanics of materials, welding metallurgy, and surface modification. He has served Hanyang since 1995, and works with the Kinetic Spray Coating Laboratory at the university.
Born in Daegu, South Korea to Sang Tae Lee and Buntae Kim in 1956, Dr. Lee first studied at Hanyang to earn a BA in Metallurgical Engineering in 1982. He went on to the University of Tennessee in America to earn a master's degree and a PhD in 1988. Dr. Lee was accepted as a senior researcher with the Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology and spent one year with the Institute of Technology at POSCO, the multinational steel firm headquartered in South Korea. In 1995, Dr. Lee returned to Hanyang as a professor, and in 2008, he was appointed chief of the Institute of Steel Process and Application at the university.
Dr. Lee has research interest in numerous engineering applications, including modeling for prediction of microstructures of HAZ in weld metal, development of weld filler metal for high strength steels, evaluation of mechanical properties of steels with high manganese content, as well as kinetic and thermal spray coatings. He has notably contributed to the editorial board of the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials, and serves as its president. He is a member of the American Welding Society, which presented him with a 1989 Warren Savage Award. Dr. Lee is notably affiliated with the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, the Korean Welding and Joining Society, the Korean Society of Laser Processing, and the Korea Thermal Spray Association.
Numerous institutions have presented Dr. Lee with recognition for his academic papers and research, including the 2006 Best Paper Award from the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies, the 2007 Yoon Dong-Suk Award from the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials, the 2009 Minister Award Certificate from the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy, the 2010 Outstanding Industrial-Educational Cooperation Award from Hanyang University, and the 2011 Best Research Professor Award from Hanyang University. Dr. Lee was selected for inclusion in three volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering from 2005 to 2009, as well as the 2007 volume of Who's Who in Asia. He is married, and has two children.
