He began a medical career in 1958 upon graduating from The Citadel with a Bachelor of Science. From there, Dr. Hammond went on to complete an MD at Duke University before joining the university as a resident in obstetrics and gynecology, a position he held between 1962 and 1963, then 1966 to 1969. In 1964, he completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology.
Dr. Hammond transitioned into an educator role at Duke University in 1969 when he accepted a position as an assistant professor of the department of obstetrics and gynecology. In 1973, he was promoted to associate professor, and in 1978, he assumed the role of professor. In 2010 Dr. Hammond was recognized as an E.C. Hamblen Professor Emeritus following nearly 30 years of service in academia.
Previously, Dr. Hammond served as the chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University between 1980 and 2002. He was also involved with the U.S. Public Health Service between 1964 and 1966, serving at the National Institutes of Health as a fellow in the National Cancer Institute and the Institute of Child Health. A diplomate through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in both specialty practice and reproductive endocrinology, Dr. Hammond is widely recognized for his written contributions to his fields of expertise. He maintains active involvement with a wide range of medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Society of Gynecological Investigation, the American Gynecological Society, the American Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Furthermore, Dr. Hammond is the former president of the North Carolina Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Fertility Society, the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Foundation, the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Hammond has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. He was also selected for inclusion in the 4th through 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, as well as the 1st through 8th editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. Dr. Hammond is recognized as a fellow ad eundeum with the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, an honorary member of the Canadian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a member of the Institute of Medicine, now the Academy of Medicine. He was granted a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2015.
