Charles K. Turk shares his journey from life under the Nazi regime to his life in America in "My Father's Words"

PHILADELPHIA, PA, November 12, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Charles K. Turk, Author, Priority Consultant and retired Teacher, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in educational services.

It is a beautiful morning in Henrietta, a southern suburb of Rochester, New York. I am driving to work to teach English at McQuaid Jesuit High School, about eight miles from my home.

It seems an ordinary enough statement, but the tortuous road that led this far started way back, long ago, in the village of Vencsello, a small community of about 5,000 people in the County of Szabolcs, in Hungary.

So writes Charles K. Turk in his 1997 autobiography "My Father's Words," which details his family's struggles under the Nazi and Bolshevik regimes. The book follows Charles's life, including his struggles to survive in the communist secret service, trying to avoid becoming an informant to betray his family. While Charles notes that he was too young to understand the effects this had on his parents at the time, he nevertheless "knew that something had to be drastically wrong." In 1956, Charles Turk escaped to Austria and immigrated to the U.S. as a refugee from the Hungarian Uprising.

Although he spoke no English at the time, Mr. Turk would ultimately become an expert on the language. He studied education with heavy emphasis on English, philosophy and history and went on to earn his master's degree at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. He later took a position at McQuaid Jesuit High School - during his 30-year tenure, Mr. Turk taught English at all levels, revised the department syllabus and served as chairman of the English department for over a decade. He also wrote a textbook on how to teach AP English and a handbook on expository writing.

Even in retirement, Mr. Turk continues to teach on a part-time basis. He conducts seminars for high school teachers on AP English exam preparation techniques and is currently working on two new books. Possessing a total of 43 years of experience, Mr. Turk attributes his success to his love for mentoring youth and his desire to help others. He was named "Teacher of the Year" by Who's Who Among American Teachers in 1996, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2007.

Charles K. Turk is an accomplished man of noteworthy achievements. In "My Father's Words," however, he notes that these milestones have meant more to him than just professional success. Rather, they represent a journey that has led him through World War II, through communist oppression and to America. As a husband, a father and a grandfather, Mr. Turk regards the present as a "pleasant oasis after some very long treks of desert travel in the school of life."
