/24-7PressRelease/ - SAN DIEGO, CA, September 30, 2007 - Jimmie Johnson the defending champion entering NASCAR's Chase and perennial championship contender of leading Chevrolet dealer Hendrick Automotive, has said that it's tough to chalk out a clear strategy for the Nextel Cup championship.
In the inaugural in NASCAR's Chase in 2004, Jimmie Johnson had proved that it is not necessary to get off to a great start in the 10-race playoff. After starting off with finishes of 11th and 10th at New Hampshire and Dover, he slipped to 37th and 32nd at Talladega and Kansas. That left him ninth in the standings, 247 points behind leader Kurt Busch. Johnson then staged a furious rally, winning four of the final six races and coming up just eight points short of champion Busch.
Last year, Johnson crashed and finished 39th in the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire and followed with finishes of 13th at Dover, 14th at Kansas and 24th at Talladega, where he was taken out of the race on the last lap. That left Johnson eighth, 156 points behind leader Jeff Burton. Johnson then ran off consecutive finishes of second, first, second, second and second before wrapping up his first Cup title with the ninth-place at Homestead.
