Cherie-Ann Nathan Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Surgeon, researcher, and educator all in one, Dr. Nathan teaches medicine as the Jack Pou endowed professor of the Louisiana State University Health Science Center at Shreveport and serves as the chairman of the department of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. She directs research in these areas as Director of Head and Neck Surgery at the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center on the campus of the medical school, applying her passion for improving patient treatments that motivated her to move from Mumbai, India in the 1980s. Dr. Nathan specializes in malignancies of the upper aerodigestive tract as well as thyroid, parathyroid disease, salivary gland tumors, and voice disorders while targeting cancer treatments in her research.

Dr. Nathan was born to Jeffrey Victor and Gema Maria Menezes and studied medicine at TNMC, Bombay University before conducting postdoctoral studies at Johns Hopkins University. She completed her surgical residency at the University of California, San Diego, followed by a one-year head and neck surgery fellowship at UCSD. After one year at the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center as Chief of ENT, she moved to LSUHSC as assistant professor of otolaryngology and quickly rose through the ranks to become professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery. As a leader in head and neck surgery in Louisiana, she has received grants from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health to conduct research, mostly focused on targeting the AKT/mTOR pathway in head and neck cancer.

Dr. Nathan is internationally renowned for her seminal work on molecular analysis of surgical margins, as well as her pioneering work with multi-institutional clinical trials using mTOR inhibitors in squamous cell carcinoma patients in collaboration with the pharmaceutical companies Wyeth and Novartis. Dr. Nathan is a team member of the COBRE grant for viral oncogenesis and has published extensively, with over 170 publications in peer reviewed journals, multiple textbooks, and encyclopedia chapters to her name.

Dr. Nathan serves on multiple national committees, including the National Cancer Institute steering committee and task force, the HPV Task Force jointly held by the Center for Disease Control and the American Cancer Society, Head and Neck Cancer Alliance and the ASCO Larynx Preservation Guideline Panel. She is currently the Vice President of the American Head and Neck Society and associate editor for the Laryngoscope Online journal "Laryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology."
Dr. Nathan is a member of the American Head and Neck Society, Academy of Otolaryngology/HNS, AACR and American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Nathan has been recognized with the Athena Award for community service from the Shreveport-Bossier Commerce Department, the Leonard Tow Humanism award from the Arnold Gold Foundation, multiple National Institutes of Health R01 Awards, and membership with Alpha Omega Alpha. The Board of Regents in Louisiana established the "Cherie-Ann Nathan Endowed Professorship in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery" initiated by grateful patients to honor her dedication and expertise. Dr. Nathan has notably been inducted into the Collegium Oto-Rhino Larynlcium Amicitae Socium, or CORLAS, founded in 1926 during wartime as a diplomatic exchange between international physicians.

Dr. Nathan is married to pulmonary and critical care physician Raghu Nathan and is the mother of two boys, Sean and Neil. Her favorite hobby is to perform with the "Nathan Family Trio" to raise money for the Arts and Cancer research in Shreveport, though she also enjoys playing the piano, dancing, hiking, and ping pong.
