/24-7PressRelease/ -- Scouting in Central Texas salutes Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo for his decision to take a new leadership role in expanding Scouting's outreach programs targeting urban and economically disadvantaged youth.
Chief Acevedo has agreed to serve as Chairman of the Urban Youth Initiative, an umbrella of outreach programs by the Capitol Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. The initiative aims to provide Scouting programs to youth and families who might not otherwise be aware of them or able to afford participation in them. Acevedo has been a member of the Capitol Area Council's Executive Board and chaired the outreach section of its 2010-2015 Strategic Plan.
"Chief Acevedo has been proactive in his outreach to the community through the Austin Police Department, and we've been fortunate to have someone of his character helping plan our outreach efforts, too," says J.T. Dabbs, Scout Executive of the Capitol Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. "With this new role, Chief Acevedo will help us take the next step in our push to recruit more volunteers for our programs."
Scouting began 2010 with 22,415 youth members in Central Texas -- a record total for the area.
However, significant opportunities remain to better serve inner city neighborhoods and economically disadvantaged families.
