/24-7PressRelease/ - NEW YORK, NY, June 01, 2008 - Lucinda Hocking, Manager of Programs for CIOF, and a spokesperson for the Foundation issued a challenge to Nintendo, as well as to all manufacturers of electronic games and computers.
Hocking stated, "We applaud the efforts of Nintendo and other companies who are trying to incorporate physical activity and fitness awareness into their games. But after Nintendo's recent gaffe, we would invite every one of these companies to consult with CIOF prior to the market release of any games which use fitness measurements or body image categorizations. These are areas which should include some expert input during the planning stages. Misusing a measurement system or labeling children can cause severe emotional damage. Children and teens are extremely body conscious."
"It would be terrible to have a well-intended game turn out to be a curse when it could otherwise have been a blessing. We invite the gaming companies to contact us at either info@ciofoundation.org or at 866-526-7086, toll-free, without obligation. Let's not hurt these kids. They are already struggling with issues of body image."
"This is not so much a challenge as an invitation. We would like for these manufacturers to be a part of the solution to overweight and obesity, instead of merely stigmatizing it."
CIOF is funded with contributions from the general public, and is at the forefront of the war on overweight and obesity in kids and teens.
