AMMAN, JORDAN, January 08, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jordan Pioneers, the producers behind Hikayat Simsim, presented and launched the final research findings and Educational framework of the baseline study titled "Children's Knowledge of Road Safety in Jordan" for children's road safety awareness, at the Jordan Children's Museum on Wednesday, January 6th 2010.
In order to develop a comprehensive educational framework of road safety for children, a research was conducted in May 2009 targeting children between the age of 4-7, through individual interviews with children and focus groups of parents and teachers. Based on the results, 47.5% of children walk to school, and 67.4% walk to school unaccompanied by adults. The higher percentage of children who are unaccompanied by adults while on the road are from the south of the Kingdom.
Many children in Jordan have a fair understanding and knowledge of the basics of road safety and safety rules; however there is an immense urge to reinforce this existing knowledge so as to preempt any possible unfortunate tragic accidents and to be able to confront and deal with any possible situation.
General Manager of Jordan Pioneers, Mr. Khaled Haddad, said: "Hikayat Simsim, all traffic organizations and the early childhood organizations are obliged and committed to model safety behaviors by capitalizing on every opportunity to implicitly and explicitly present safe practices". "We, as a Jordanian leading organization, are responsible for serving the local community, especially children, and we consider taking care of their safety and protection as one of our primary objectives in our upcoming strategy", he added.
On her part, Director of Educational Content and Research, Ms. Reem Zada, stated:"There is an insistent need to road safety awareness as there are not enough if not any comprehensive educational framework for children on road safety. The lack of road safety awareness is one of the main causes of road accidents in Jordan. Accordingly, this road safety and awareness study was designed to test baseline knowledge of children between the ages of 4-7 in order to build an educational framework for road safety awareness directed to children.
The Curriculum and Research Specialist, Ms. Rana Subaih, said: "Hikayat Simsim can have a major impact through the development of a road safety educational framework based on research and the delivery of road safety messages by implementing various communication platforms".
This study, another component of the Hikayat Simsim initiative, contributes to the educational consistency of this national project that is made possible through the generous support of The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Bank of Jordan.
