A 2012 poll by CID Gallup Latin America showcases Nicaragua as the Central American country with the lowest levels of criminality in the region, including Panama and the Dominican Republic.

WASHINGTON, DC, November 21, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A recent poll by CID Gallup Latin America showcases Nicaragua as the Central American country with the lowest levels of criminality in the region, including Panama and the Dominican Republic.

The poll's results, based on approximately 1,200 interviews per country during September and October 2012, show Nicaragua's proportion of citizens that report having been robbed or assaulted in the last four months was 19 percent, followed by Costa Rica with 21, Panama with 22, the Dominican Republic with 25, El Salvador with 28, Guatemala 29 and Honduras with 32.

A previous poll held in 2010 had also shown Nicaragua to have the lowest incidence of crime in Central America, highlighting the country was still free from the climate of insecurity in neighboring countries.

This poll comes to confirm the high levels of safety in Nicaragua that have been recognized by institutions such as the Economist Intelligence Unit in its 2012 Security Risk Report, ranking the country among the safest in Latin America. Additionally, Nicaragua holds the lowest homicides rates in Central America in 2011, 12 for every 100,000 inhabitants, well below the Latin American average of 26, according to the United Nations.

The country not only offers tranquility and peace of mind to visitors, but also an excellent quality of life. This is why Nicaragua has been featured as one of the most attractive retirement havens in the world, according to renowned international publications such as TravelAge West, U.S. News and AARP Magazine.
