With an onus on alternative views to meek mainstream TV, the channel's new site launches with reports made by young unemployed citizens concerned about their prospects. They reject the prejudice that benefit claimants are idle spongers 'on the suck'; interview experts on the facts and on ideas for innovation; send up the 'Mcjobs' on offer; take part in debates on state dependency and question the lack of protests.
The new site not only showcases broadcast quality programmes with something new to say but offers free film training opportunities to young citizens, demonstrating they are more than couch potatoes.
The channel is run by WORLDwrite, a London based education charity. The Director, Ceri Dingle, explains Citizen TV:
"In one sense we're all citizen journalists now and the mainstream media gathers sound bites from us to extend its reach and provide an interactive edge. We're allowed to text vote on shows, our emails are read out on breakfast news, an occasional mobile phone clip gets aired but where is the access to the training or expensive kit to allow us to contribute serious reports, alternative stories, views and news? WORLDbytes, the charity's pioneering channel, has stepped into the breach to ensure Citizen TV is both possible and taken seriously."
