City set to cook worldıs largest pot of beans
The city will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record when it cooks 600 gallons of pinto beans at the 11th annual Harvest Pride Days Festival Oct. 20-21.

    /24-7PressRelease/ - BEAN STATION, TN, October 16, 2007 - The recipe for the colossal feat includes over 1,200 pounds of dry pinto beans, 10 pounds of salt, and 20 gallons of lard, plus assorted seasonings. It is estimated the beans will take about 16 hours to soak and fully cook. A specially designed six-foot stainless steel pot was constructed to hold the beans. Volunteers from C.R Daniels will cook the beans and the Bean Station Senior Citizens will sell bowls of beans and corn bread, as well as T-shirts commemorating the historic event. The beans are slated to begin being served to the public Saturday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m.

The free, two-day festival features a variety of music, dancing, food and craft vendors, and childrenıs activities. There will also be a cornbread and pumpkin pie baking contest. For contest details, visit http://www.graingertoday.com. Festival hours Oct. 20 are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 21 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Corporate sponsors include Flat-D Innovations, Inc., a company that produces a ³flatulence deodorizer,² Grainger Today, Citizens Bank & Trust of Grainger County, Ritter Farms, Outdoor Oven Company, the Grainger County Chamber of Commerce, WIVK, and Charter Communications. Industrial Metal Fabrication provided the labor to build the giant pot. Bush Brothers Beans is donating 1,200 lbs. of dry pinto beans. And Holston Gases, Inc. is supplying the equipment to heat the pot.

The current world record of 350 gallons of baked beans was set in 2002 by the city of Horace, ND, according to the Guinness World Records Web site.
