Americana, Civil War and Medical Antiques

Fresh from a Hastings home are two large antique Cigar Store Indians, one a princess.

In addition, Clarke is selling a collection of Civil War militaria consigned by a direct descendant of the original owner, Captain John H Budke. Budke was born in Germany in 1824 and emigrated to America in 1844, establishing successful New York businesses. According to family history, Budke raised a unit of German-American militia for New York and was mobilized as part of the Third Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. Budke was an officer during the infamous Draft Riots of 1863 and was brevetted a Colonel and died in Brooklyn NY in 1896. Included in the March 27th auction are Budke's presentation saber, his service saber and his original militia sword, his epaulets in their original tin case, and early Colt and Whitney revolvers.

From a local surgeon, a collection of antique and vintage medical tools including a Confederate surgeon's kit and numerous other examples. This sale also features an early saleman's display of Lederle Labs drugs and also apothecary jars.

Of special interest is a collection of colorful oils in the style of Matisse by the late Martin Eichtersheimer of New York, the Hamptons, and Monhegan Island. Eichtensheimer's fine art studies were interrupted by his four year service in Europe during World World Two. He returned to the United States and founded his own graphic arts company in Manhattan. Eichtersheimer knew Andy Warhol well - Warhol was among the artists that he commissioned for commercial work in the 1950's. A highlight of this auction is a dramatic c.1935 self-portrait of the young Eichtersheimer.

Midcentury Modern is highlighted by pieces from the Laverne brothers, Hans Wenger, Charles Eames, and Karl Springer.

Antiques include the aforementioned Italian chest, numerous examples of French marble-topped and gilt bronze pieces, and English and American 19th C. examples.
