Clarke Auction's High Noon Auction - Sunday, February 27, 12:00 Noon

360 lots features Meissen collection; Tiffany Favrile, sterling, coin silver; photographs by Penn, Horst, Michals, Adams, Kahn; 19th C. Italian carved harlequin; art by Josef Albers, Samuel Colman, John Rhoden, JF Herring; midcentury and antiques.



    LARCHMONT, NY, February 25, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On Sunday, February 27 at 12:00 noon, Clarke Auction will sell 360+ lots drawn from estates in Bronxville, Greenwich, Larchmont, Ossining, Park Avenue, Central Park West, and Brooklyn Heights.

Fine art includes works by Samuel Colman, A.V. Willis, Alexander Brook, John Frederick Herring II, Carlos Vazquez, Andre Andreoli, Paul Jouve, Charles Culver, Hugh O'Donnell, Darren Waterston, Leonard Besser, Robert Brackman, Marcel Herrfeldt, Rubi Roth, David Nemerov, Johan Sejg, Aurelio James Yammerino, Alfred Bendiner, Walter Gaudnek; a 19th C. oil of French lancers; and a mystery oil as found in a 19th C. attic, variously thought to be a 17th C. Old Master or a 19th C. Heinrich Hofmann.

African-American Art includes a John Rhoden mixed metal and glass modernist sculpture, purchased directly from the artist; two Walter III Cade oils, and a group of African-American works and subjects, including an oil attributed to Richandra Rhoden.

Of special interest is a Josef Albers hand-signed 1972 two volume folio Formulation:Articulation in good condition, straight from a private Larchmont collection.

Fine art photography, most from a Manhattan estate, includes examples from Irving Penn, Horst Horst, Harry Callahan, Ansel Adams, Duane Michals, Howard Frank, and Harold Kahn. The same estate also provided a large bronze of a reclining nude signed Moore as well as a collection of gay and straight erotica and a high quality collection of interior design books.

Polychromed Harlequin
The same Bronxville estate also provided a 19th century Italian carved and polychromed 40" harlequin with original paint and in good condition.

In contrast, another Bronxville location produced a period graffiti oil on door, heavily inscribed tribute to the 1983 New York graffiti martyr Michael Stewart.

Sterling and silver examples such as 19th C. Tiffany coin silver, a Tiffany sterling serving pieces, plate, bowl, and vanity set, 19th C. Morgan silver dollars, an older octagonal lidded jar with crest & monogram, a Sterling J.E. Caldwell & Co.pedestal centerpiece, a 48 troy ounce sterling pitcher, large Chinese export-style sterling chargers and platters, large mixed lots of assorted sterling, and assorted lots of Sterling and Continental silver still being catalogued.

Midcentury modern includes two pairs of Bertoia chairs in good condition, Knoll swivel armchairs, a bamboo-based round dining table, green embossed leather and glass end tables, and assorted midcentury furniture and lighting.

Chandeliers and lighting examples are highlighted by a spectacular Edgar Brandt patinated wrought iron chandelier with ten signed Daum shades from a Madison Avenue, a pair of old ceramic decorated Chinese lamps, an ArteLuce desk lamp, a pair of gilt bronze rams-head and variegated marble table lamps, bouillotte lamps, and a French gilt bronze 42" by 36" chandelier from a Scarsdale dining room.

Other decorative arts examples are Tiffany Favrile, Dresden, Daum Nancy and Daum France, Nymphenburg, Steuben, Royal Copenhagen and B&G figurines, Sevres, a collection of Chinese snuff jars and boxes, an exceptional Lalique green agate box with nude cover, and malachite pieces including carved animals.

Antique furniture includes a heavily-carved oak bookcase, possibly Horner; two heavily-carved oak desks; an French oak armoire, a sideboard with hutch and a marble-topped Victorian dresser and mirror as well as other pieces being catalogued.

Traditional furniture examples are dining tables and chairs with several examples of banded and inlaid examples including a triple pedestal and a quarter-sawn oak Remington Rand library table.
