LaptopBuyer uses some clever algorithms to strip out around 900 known useragents and bots such as Slurp and Googlebot. Not only that, but they take the IP addresses of the routers from all the merchants on their laptop price comparison site and excludes traffic from those sources as well.
The result if that in Q2 of 2007, click fraud increased on the site increased to 45.7% of all traffic. LaptopBuyer doesn't charge its merchants for these fraudulent clicks, but CEO Nigel Apperley warned that merchants on some of the bigger comparison sites should demand to see weblogs and challenge the engines on the legitimacy of the clicks for which they have been charged. He also promised a breakdown of clicks between legitimate clicks, merchant clicks and useragent traffic in his next quarterly report.
