SILVER SPRING, MD, September 28, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Tooth loss is an unfortunate, yet fairly common problem affecting Americans. An estimated 69 percent of adults ages 35 to 44 have lost one permanent tooth, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). This statistic is proof that while tooth loss is typically associated with the elderly, it can affect people of all ages.

"If you have lost a tooth or several teeth, you don't have to live with an open, gapped space. Dental implants provide a permanent solution after tooth loss," stated Dr. Gregory Hysong, a Cloverly dentist.

Dental implants are not a new concept to the dentistry field. Skeletons dating back to the Mayan civilization were shown to have dental implants in their jawbones. Thankfully, today's dental implants are quite a bit more sophisticated than these early versions. Dental implant surgery has emerged as an alternative to dentures or dental bridges, particularly in the last 20 years. Dr. Hysong and Dr. LePore restore dental implants at their Cloverly dentist office, where he evaluates if patients are good candidates for this tooth replacement option.

For a dental implant to be successful, Dr. Hysong and Dr. LePore, Silver Spring dentists, must evaluate a patient's jawbone to determine if enough bone is remaining for a dental implant to be successfully placed in the jawbone. Bone loss is a common side effect after losing a tooth, which is why quickly replacing a lost tooth with a dental implant is important. Also, patients with heart disease, diabetes or have previously undergone radiation therapy may not be the ideal patients for the procedure due to concerns over infection and healing rates.

Dental implants consist of three portions: a titanium tooth root, an abutment that fits over the tooth root and a crown to replace a lost tooth and blend in seamlessly with your remaining teeth. Dr. Hysong and Dr. LePore also can create a dental bridge to replace two to three missing teeth that snaps on the abutments.

After a consultation, the initial intervention is to surgically implant a titanium implant into a patient's jawbone. This process can require six weeks to several months for the bone to fully heal around the implant. If necessary, a local surgeon can perform a bone graft to enhance bone growth.

When the bone has fully healed around the implant, Dr. Hysong and Dr. LePore attach an abutment or anchor to the implant. This abutment will anchor the replacement tooth securely to a patient's jaw. A dental laboratory will manufacture the replacement tooth, which is also called a crown.

After implantation, dental implants will not slip out of place as a denture or bridge can. They are a permanent, well-blended option for replacing a tooth. According to the AAOMS, the success rate for dental implants is 95 percent.

Dr. Gregory Hysong and Dr. Lynda LePore offer a consultation with patients to identify the benefits of a dental implant. At Colesville Dentistry, Silver Spring, MD dentists, patients have experienced results that are nothing short of amazing thanks to dental implants.
