Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla's win coveted 2005 Boating Safety Grants
The annual BOATU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has announced the 2005 winners of their Boating Safety Grants.
Over $40,000 in grants were bestowed on this years' winners; who bid for seed money to institute innovated ideas on teaching and displaying safe boating and environmentally sound boating practices.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary 2005 BoatU.S. Foundation Boating Safety Grant Recipients are:
Auxiliary Flotilla 0205, located in Seward, AK: to reproduce the "Emergency Procedures" boating sticker and translate it into Inupiat, Korean, Japanese, Togalog and Chinese.
Auxiliary Flotilla 0887, located in Sandpoint, ID: to design and install signs at each of the 22 boat launches surrounding Lake Pend Oreille and the Pend Oreille River encouraging boaters to wear life jackets.
Auxiliary Flotilla 0204, located in Lincroft, NJ: to create and distribute 500 life jacket foam drink holders and flyers with safety messages regarding the importance of life jacket usage.
Auxiliary Flotilla 1109, located in Brooklyn, NY: to create and distribute 1,000 16-page, full color boating safety booklets.
Auxiliary Flotilla 7, located in Salt Lake City, UT: to design and post refueling procedure signs at all on-the-water gas refueling points within the state.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer civilians who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation's waterways, in the air, in classrooms and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and re-designated as the Auxiliary in 1941. Its 30,000 members donate millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions.
