/24-7PressRelease/ - DIAMOND BAR, CA, August 12, 2007 -- Artist/author Carl Allen Schoner was at a loss to explain the obvious. Despite all of his efforts to nurture sales of the many books he has written, many customers have been mysteriously drawn to the one book he has admonished them not to buy! "Spaghetti Code," which the author just "put together" to humorously illustrate the ridiculous complexity of computer programming , is described as "a delicious compilation of assorted algorithms, programs, applications, and cartoons created over the years using a variety of tools, programming languages, and India ink." The marketing slogan for this book is the stern warning "Do not but this book to learn how to program! This is more of a book on how NOT to program!" Amazingly, though, the percentage of people who "hit" upon this book and then go on to purchase it is incredibly high.
The author/artist and Oracle DBA has a degree in behavioral science and is also a certified clinical hypnotherapist. He is also the author of "Dream Psycles - a New Awakening in Hypnosis." After considerable thought, he came to the conclusion that it is "cognitive dissonance" that is driving the sales of "Spaghetti Code." Cognitive dissonance is that uncomfortable mental conflict that develops when one is faced with two opposing perceptions at the same time. The mind must ultimately resolve this conflict by choosing between the opposing perceptions. In the case of "Spaghetti Code," the conflict arises when one first previews the finished, polished book, which seems to offer all sorts of promising information and entertainment value, but then the author admonishes not to buy it. They must decide either that the book must be really, really bad, or that the admonishment not to buy is really more humor in disguise, and in most cases they opt for the latter.
In a world where commercials and advertisements are constantly vying for the attention of consumers and pressuring them to buy something, it may simply be that people are happily relieved to see an advertisement that encourages them to do just the opposite!
