SAN JOSE, CA, July 24, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- CollabNet, the leader in distributed application lifecycle management (ALM) solutions, announced today that it has joined Open Source for America as a founding member. The organization is a broad cross-section of more than 50 companies, academic institutions, communities, related groups, and individuals that serve as a unified voice for the promotion of open source in the U.S. federal government sector. Open Source for America strives to effect change in government to encourage broader support of open source technologies and the open source development community.

CollabNet's flagship product, CollabNet TeamForge, enables organizations of all sizes to leverage the best practices of open source software communities to develop better software faster. Recently, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) selected CollabNet TeamForge as the foundation for its Forge.mil initiative. Carahsoft Technology Corp. delivers the CollabNet TeamForge software at the heart of Forge.mil to the DoD's Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) under a recently awarded ESI Blanket Purchase Agreement for Open Source Solutions.

CollabNet is also the corporate sponsor of the open source Subversion project, the leading version control and software configuration management (SCM ) tool for distributed teams. The largest and most successful open source software communities in the world, including java.net, openoffice.org, and tigris.org, are based on CollabNet.

"We've received great responses from companies, organizations, and individuals interested in joining together to advocate for greater use of open source software in the U.S. federal government," said David Thomas, principal at Mehlman Vogel Castagnetti and spokesman for the Open Source for America campaign. "We are very pleased to welcome CollabNet in joining our cause and look forward to their active involvement in articulating the true value open source delivers to the U.S. government."

"The U.S. government is already discovering that open source software can provide the same benefits, including cost savings, increased software quality, and more rapid deployment, that enterprises enjoy. Our work with DISA's Forge.mil initiative is a great example of that," said Bill Portelli, chief executive officer, CollabNet. "We're looking forward to working with Open Source for America to drive even greater government adoption of open source software."

As a founding member of Open Source for America, CollabNet has pledged to support the organization's mission and its founding principles. These include the beliefs that the U.S. federal government can and should become more transparent, participatory, secure, and efficient by leveraging the advantages of open source software; the open source community can drive collaborative innovation for government; and the decision to use software should be driven solely by the requirements of the user.
